What was I thinking starting a company…
That’s the question people want to ask me. It's on their minds when they see me at birthday parties, baby showers, kids sporting activities, and surely over a drink at the bar in Boston in a couple of weeks (though it may not be the good stuff since we’re on the startup budget).
After more than 6 years of having the opportunity to be in rooms and on zooms whiteboarding strategy with leaders at staffing firms of all sizes and in all industries and LOVING it, why would I walk away from it? Truthfully the answer is actually in the question. Because you can only strategize how to make a faster horse so many times before it becomes undeniable that what’s really needed is a path to combining 4 wheels with an engine to create an ability for people to get where they want to go faster and more efficiently by rethinking “how its always been done.”
Look over at your whiteboard for your morning standups. Are the KPI’s you are tracking still Subs, Interviews, Offers, and Starts? How long have those same metrics been THE measure of team performance?
Over all those years, being in all those rooms, everyone was asking the same root question:
"How do we find data on activities that lead to the KPI changing?"
My team would come up with reports to look at the data but it was NEVER easy. Some fields weren’t filled in on every candidate, some offices used this status to mean one thing while others used it to mean something totally different. And above all else, the recruiters and sales people on the front lines are having to scratch and claw for every win post-pandemic. We can’t possibly put more administrative requirements on them to ensure we have this data.
Honestly it was right there, in one of those meetings with a customer where we were sifting through data trying to let it tell us a story but instead being buried within the data. It felt more like the million pop-up ads when you click on that type of email link IT always warned you about… it was that moment we knew, our industry was riding horses and it was time for us to start designing a car.
The good news for all of us is that the gas to power this innovation is the data you already have in your systems. We just need to refine it - and that's the mission of Toro.
